Your Killer Instagram Bio
One of the most frequently asked questions I get during private coaching calls is what should go into a pleasing and effective Instagram bio—and essentially, why it’s even important. Your bio is one of the very first things someone looks at when they visit your profile. It’s your identity. Your first impression— and it needs to be more than just good.
So, what is a good Instagram bio?
IG Handle — When was the last time you asked yourself if your handle aligns with your brand? Have you thought about changing it recently? You Instagram handle is the telling story of your platform.
Keywords — You can add a relevant keyword for your brand, blog or business in the name and username and bio description of your profile. Instagram uses this type of information when someone is searching or scrolling the discover section.
Keywords in your IG bio can and should include what your platform stands for. For example “Motherhood + Lifestyle Blogger” or “Fitness Junkie” — This simple trick is one of the most commonly missed secrets to growth. Whatever helps the algorithm find you, it a game changer!
Tag Line — The tag line that follows your name and account category should be clever, catchy and a direct representation of you and your brand. Remember, your characters are limited in the BIO section, so choose your words wisely. Would they draw you in if you were an outsider?
Clear Description - What is the value you are bringing to others and how does that come across on your page. There are several different ways to do this and to make it appealing — but you want to focus on making a clear distinction between you and everyone else. What is the value you are brining to your audience. Is it humor? Mental health awareness? Health and Wellness? These also double as searchable key words.
Alignment and Aesthetics— This comes in all different shapes and sizes. For me, it means everything lining up, looking clean and clear and easy to read. The use of emoticons can help with the attraction power and alignment of your different key words and descriptions. (Be care not to go emoji crazy—it quickly moves to a more childish and unpolished feeling)
Avoid distracting fonts. I know, it looks cool— but professionally and statistically speaking — something too distracting can actually hurt your bio and account. Again, you are playing with that thin line of your bio looking childish, Stick to the regular IG format and fonts and let your words speak for themselves.
Include your email— Most people don’t realize this, but a brand or audience looking at your profile on a desktop does not have the option to contact you by the mobile clickable links. You want brands to have the easiest and clearest way possible to contact you. Double email? Yes. Both in your bio and as a clickable contact option.
Any Additional Info - Anything that you think is clear and simple and helps represent your brand. Perhaps your location, or family status

Things to Remember
Profile Picture - Your profile picture, just like your bio, is a first impression and it’s also the best and easiest way for your followers to recognize you. Pick a picture that is close up, clear and eye catching, Oh, and pick something you love. Profile pictures should be updated no more than 1-2 times a year. Every time you change your profile picture, your audience is required to readjust and no longer recognizes you right off the bat.
Check your links - Seems obvious, but check and double check that all your bio links are working. Be sure you email address is correct and any other contact info you are providing are up to date.
